Our state's tomatoes are nationally recognized as being among the best in the world. To pay homage to the great work being done in our state and to promote local agriculture, the New Jersey Department of Agriculture honors those who have excelled in providing Jersey Fresh produce to school children in our state. They are the Top Tomatoes in the Jersey Fresh Farm to School Program!
David Friedrich serves as principal at Hopewell Elementary School (@HopewellES), a closely-knit community of 450 students. HES is proud to offer an organic, homemade lunch twice a week to students and staff. Each fall, HES hosts a Farm to School event which features local chefs and farmers offering hands-on demonstrations and tastings in their garden. Next year, students at HES will harvest aeroponically-grown vegetables and herbs in their greenhouse which will be used in the preparation of student and staff lunch. One of David's most rewarding experiences at HES was when he partnered with five local chefs to host a Top Chef enrichment class for his students.
